Celebrity Talk: ‘The Five Beaches’, Dr Peter Caddick-Adams, 11.45 Sunday 9th June 2019
June 9 @ 11:45 am - 12:45 pm£5 - £8
Dr Peter Caddick-Adams, ‘The Five Beaches’
Peter’s latest book on D-Day is due to be published in May this year.
Sand and Steel gives us D-Day, arguably the greatest and most consequential military operation of modern times, beginning with the years of painstaking and costly preparation, through to the pitched battles fought along France’s northern coast, from Omaha Beach to the Falaise and the push east to Strasbourg.
Sand and Steel reveals precisely what lay in wait for the Allies. But the heart of the book is Caddick-Adams’ narratives of the five beaches where the terrible drama played out — Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword, and the attempt by American, British, and Canadian soldiers to gain a foothold in Europe. It is this crucial element of D-Day, the assault on the Five Beaches, that Peter will concentrate on in his talk to us.
Visitors also intending to take a Map Room tour should select from those leaving at 09.45, 13.30 or 14.45 to avoid a clash with the timing of this talk.
